How to Decrease Humidity in Your Home!

humidity

If you live in an area with high humidity, you know how uncomfortable it can be. The good news is that there are some things you can do to decrease the amount of moisture in your home and make it more comfortable!

Michigan humidity

It’s no joke! It isn’t so bad in spring here in Oakland County and the Detroit area, but we’re especially prone to humid summers. Humidity can make it feel even hotter than it actually is.

Is a humid home bad?

You know that an overly humid home is uncomfortable, but does it actually pose any risks? In short, yes. High humidity can lead to the growth of mold and mildew, which can cause health problems for you and your family members, such as allergies and respiratory problems.

Ventilate by opening windows

You might think that opening windows would make the humidity problem worse. Still, if your home is very humid inside, it’s likely to be slightly less sticky outside, and opening a window and circulating the air can actually help remove some of the moisture. If you’re not sure whether it’s more humid inside or outside, try using a hygrometer to measure the humidity levels in both places. Of course, this isn’t the most efficient method either way, and you’ll probably want to try something else …

Use exhaust fans

Exhaust fans are a great way to remove humid air from your home. These can be installed in your kitchen and bathroom, and they work by venting the air to the outside. This is a great way to remove moisture from the air, so it can also help to prevent mold and mildew from growing in these rooms.

Use a dehumidifier

One way to decrease the amount of moisture in your home is to use a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers work by removing water from the air, and they can be a great way to keep your home comfortable during the humid months. Dehumidifiers come in all different sizes, so you can choose one that’s right for your home. For example, if you have a small apartment, you might want to get a portable dehumidifier that you can move from room to room as needed.

Use air conditioning

One way to decrease humidity is to use an air conditioner. Air conditioners work by removing moisture from the air as they cool it. As the warm air inside your home blows over the cold coils in your air conditioner, the water in the air condenses on the coils and drips into a pan below. This helps lower the humidity level in your home and keep you cool! In fact, air conditioners were first invented to help people deal with high humidity, rather than cooling the air – which is why they’re called “air conditioners” and not “air filters”! So air conditioners are definitely a good option if you’re looking for ways to decrease the amount of moisture in your home.
