Many furnace, air conditioner, and thermostat designs are considered works of art to HVAC folks and manufacturers. To most of us, however, it’s best that they reside in our homes, out of sight. However, there is that outdoor air conditioner condenser unit with the giant fan. That is a different story. It’s big and it sticks out like a sore thumb near the side or back of your home.
Fear not, there are ways to camouflage the baby elephant in the yard. But do be aware that allowing trees, shrubs or plants to grow too close to it will “choke” it. Unable to breathe, so to speak, the unit will have to work overtime. That means more expensive energy bills and a shorter lifespan for the unit. Check out three ways to transform your outdoor A/C unit from eyesore… to eye candy!
Iron Trellis
An iron trellis is a great way to hide your A/C unit. It comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors, so you can pick what best suits your outdoor color scheme. To top off your iron trellis, be sure to decorate it with multicolored plants and vines. As the foliage grows, be sure the A/C unit is always free of debris!
A Small Fence
Another effective way to hide the unit is to surround it with a small fence. You can buy fence sections of varying styles, ready to install, at most major hardware stores. Or, maybe you like to build things. You can buy the wood and do your magic. Or you might consider used, wooden pallets. They can be sourced online, at lumber yards, some groceries, various warehouses around your area, furniture stores, pet stores, etc.
Make sure you wear gloves as old pallets can have splits and really be filthy. Sand for a smooth look and paint or stain to match your outdoor color scheme.
Build a Pathway
Diverting attention away from your outdoor unit is also an option. Building a beautiful pathway can do the trick. Make sure the pathway leads to a beautiful view or outdoor entertainment area. A pathway draws focus on what’s ahead, which allows the A/C unit on the side of your home to almost disappear from sight. Fencing and lush green vegetation will make a huge difference as well.
